Tell me how to fix an ice maker on a KitchenAid refrigerator. The Teflon lining in their ice makers tend to corrode. Whether that’s bad or not depends on how often you’re drinking the ice cubes versus using it in a chill pack.I haven’t seen an issue with the ice maker lining. I don’t know if I’d taste it.They have problems with the ice dispensing, then freezing in the line, and then it stops dispensing. That’s better than a unit that can’t make ice because the door ice maker never gets cold enough.I know that would cause it to dispense slush ice or small cubes if not cold water from an ice maker. On the other hand, door ice makers may freeze the items on the inside of the fridge door trying to make ice.If that was happening, I would just move what was in the fridge door to the shelves and be glad it worked. But I don’t have an in door ice maker. If it doesn’t dispense ice now but previously did, any model of ice maker could have a frozen chunk in the water line preventing it from getting water to make ice with. That’s easy to fix – blow dry the water line to melt the ice if you don’t want to just defrost the freezer.I’ve heard of their fridges needing new ice makers installed after just six months.I’d expect that to be covered by the warranty.First, they argue it is your fault and rarely cover the parts under the warranty.

Second, even if the warranty covers it, it covers the parts but never the labor. The labor to replace the ice maker is at least a hundred dollars. If you have to pay for a new ice maker plus labor, it could hit three hundred dollars or more. That’s another reason to ask you what else I could fix, especially so I don’t pay for a new ice maker and find out something else needs to be replaced. The water inlet valves sometimes need to be replaced after just a year or two. The drain valve assemblies go out about as soon.A water inlet valve getting stuck shut would prevent the unit from getting water to make ice with. One of those interesting glitches with ice makers is that it could be the control board.

You may be able to solve the issue by power cycling the control board. And then I get a power failure error.Make sure you turn off the ice maker before power cycling the control board, then turn on the ice maker, so that they are in sync. And if you power cycled the fridge to fix one glitch while the ice maker was on, a lack of sync explains why it doesn’t work.No one told me that potential glitch before. Then there’s the classic make sure the ice maker is actually switched on, before you assume it isn’t working. That’s up there with making sure it isn’t off because the bin is full.It could be not working because the ice level indicator is up even if the bin isn’t. You can try flipping the level indicator back down and see if it runs. And if it doesn’t?The level switch needs to be replaced, unless there’s a bigger mechanical problem.Anything bigger than the level indicator, like a mechanical component wearing out, is best solved by replacing the whole ice maker.Which technically, solves your problem if it isn’t the water supply.
