I may be reading your post wrong but I am getting the impression that you may not have the MX pointed at the right IP. Sorry if I am wrong about how I read your post.You need to point your MX record to your exchange server public IP (or your mailfilter). You didn't elaborate on your topology but you really don't want your mal server directly accessible from the outside world over port 25. If you are only testing, you may want to enable access during your testing (enable/disable firewall rule) and disable access when not testing.You need to have a reverse pointer for your MX record (PTR record).You need to have your exchange server NAT'd to that public IP on your firewall.You need to have a firewall rule on your firewall that allows port 25 in to your exchange server. You can enable/disable this rule as needed during your testing. You also need to make sure that your exchange server can send outbound.

Your mail server has to acknowledge receipt to the sending mail server.You really do not want to put this server in production without a mail filter AV firewall, like a Barracuda.
